Welcome Jessica Sherwood: New Ceili Band Director

Jessica Sherwood is a full-time professional flutist and educator in the greater Atlanta area. An active free-lance musician, she has performed locally with the Atlanta Symphony, Atlanta Opera, and Atlanta Ballet Orchestras, and regionally with the Alabama and Charleston Symphony Orchestras. Prior to moving to Atlanta, Jessica performed extensively throughout the South Florida region, including work with the New World Symphony and the Naples Philharmonic. She was also a member of the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Charleston, South Carolina, and Spoleto, Italy. She is the flutist and founding member for Sonic Generator, the contemporary music ensemble-in-residence at Georgia Tech. Jessica studied at the University of Michigan, graduating as a member of the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society. She currently teaches instrumental music for grades 5 through 12 at The Paideia School in Atlanta.

In addition to her work as a classical flutist, Jessica began studying the Irish flute in 2000. She attended the Boxwood Festival in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where she studied with Celtic flutists Chris Norman, Cathal McConnell, and Pat O’Gorman. She has taught Irish flute and whistle through the Atlanta Irish Music School since 2010, and will be taking over as Ceili Band Director beginning in Fall 2014.

Welcome Jamie Laval:  New Adult Program Instructor

“One of the hottest fiddlers out there, this act has been turning heads wherever it plays.” (Asheville Citizen-Times)

U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion

Jamie Laval creates rapt audiences with his passionate performances of traditional music of Scotland, Ireland, Brittany and Quebec, blending an ancient art form with stunning virtuosity and contemporary flair that resonates with families, youth, seniors, and devotees of ethnic, jazz, and classical music.

An evening concert experience with Jamie combines toe-tapping melodies, amusing stories, foot percussion, and an innovative arrangement style to create a beautiful atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands.

Currently making his home in Tryon, NC, Laval grew up in the Pacific Northwest where he received his musical training at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Laval made his living as a professional symphony musician, recording studio artist, improvising violinist, and contra dance fiddler. But his passion for the haunting sounds of rural Scottish folk music eventually usurped all other preoccupations, and he now devotes himself exclusively to Celtic music.

In 2002 Laval won the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship and is today hailed as “One of North America's finest practitioners of traditional Scottish music” (San Jose Mercury News) and “The next Alasdair Fraser” (Scotland Press and Post). His touring career includes over 100 engagements per year throughout the U.S. and Scotland.

Laval has appeared on the NBC Today Show, performed on Dave Matthews' platinum album Some Devil, and gave a private performance for Her Majesty the Queen. Laval's newest album, Murmurs and Drones, won the popular vote for “Best World Traditional Album” in the 2012 Independent Music Awards.

Congrats to our U18 Ceili Band who placed 1st at the Midwest Fleadh and to all individual winners and competitors!!!!!!  Liam, Katy, Caty, Lauren, Patrick, Hollie, Nick, Dave, Ciara, Rory, Madeleine.

What Parents Are Saying about AJCB

"Our son, Noah, has been a member of the Atlanta Junior Ceili Band for more than six years now. It has been the most wonderful experience for both my son and our family.  Katherine Irwin Thomas has taught our son to play Irish fiddle by ear and he has become a skilled fiddler and tenor banjo player.  She has instilled a love of Irish music in him.  Noah has played with the band on countless stages and traveled to competitions. The experience he has gained has been immeasurable.  As a family, we have enjoyed seeing the band play with renowned musicians, for groups and organizations, at festivals and community events.  Having our son be a part of the Atlanta Junior Ceili Band has enriched Noah's life as well as our own."
